Top seal assessment of Drake Formation shales for CO2 storage in the Horda Platform area, offshore Norway

Evaluating top seal integrity is crucial for successful subsurface CO2 storage. Caprock shale geomechanical properties are complex and influenced by various parameters processes. It challenging to understand the role of factors affecting properties; therefore, an integrated approach required evaluate shales. In this study, we investigated caprock Early Jurassic shaly Drake Formation overlying reservoir sandstones Cook Johansen formations. The study area potential storage site Aurora (the Longship CCS project), located in Horda Platform area, offshore Norway. Based on lithological variations, subdivided into upper lower units. Variations using wireline logs from 50 exploration wells, two 3D seismic cubes, several 2D lines. Elastic property-based brittleness indices shales evaluated identify possible quality. Moreover, attributes gas leakage scenarios qualitatively assess possibility injected escaping reservoir. Low value near injection indicated that rock might diffuse injection-related stress change act as effective seal. qualitative assessment, it likely will be acted around site. However, due nature shales, recommend field-scale numerical simulation injection-induced stress-strain effect.
